portfolio sites
The AOI
Although not the best looking portfolio site out there , it is a very well known resource.
I wasn’t able to find out how much it costs to join the AOI but I do believe I heard that it was x amount of pounds per month.
Carbonmade
Carbonmade is not just for illustrators but for all manor of artists, as you can see it is a fairly attractive, professional looking portfolio website, if a bit childlike, but when you get to the actual portfolio pages see image 3 it becomes a really well presented page of work.
Carbonmade is free if you have 35 images or under and it is $12 or roughly £7 a month for those who wish to post more than 35 images on their site
agencyrush
http://www.agencyrush.com/
i wasnt able to find out much about this agency but i did find out that they have 26 artists on the website and If the commission is cancelled the fees payable will be as follows; 25% of agreed fees plus
expenses before delivery of roughs, 50% of agreed fees plus expenses after the delivery of
roughs and 100% of the agreed fee plus expenses after the delivery of the final Artwork.
Nowhere does it say how to submit work so i assume that you can send low res images via the email address given or printed samples to the address given.

The Artworks

For submissions they require 5-6 low res jpeg files they also except printed samples.
It appears that there is only 24 artists on the books which means that they may be particular about who they take.
There isn't any artist with them that matches/suits my style but there are elements in some works that I enjoy
They dont say how much percentage that they take on the website.

5 questions i would ask an illustrator in person if i had the chance.
1.
Do you
have an agent and is it worth having one?
2.
If you
have had agents in the past which ones would you recommend to a graduate, also
which ones would you advise to stay away from?
3.
How many
pieces of your best work would you put into your portfolio?
4.
Are you
employed or self employed?
5.
Do you
make a living purely from your illustration?
Allison Torneros
Allison Torneros is an illustrator based in Los Angeles, California. Best known for her feminine, graffiti-inspired imagery, her style captures the essence of reverie and emotion. She enjoys exploring the line where rough meets refined, creating loose washes of paint, then tightening certain areas of the piece to make her subjects appear to pop. She can switch effortlessly between paintbrush and Tablet pen to create an image.
Allison is also a fine artist, exhibiting her work worldwide. She recently released an artist collaboration with the North Face for Spring '11.

Mel Holmes Mural artist
Mel Holmes graduated from Norwich School of Art in 1992 with a Ba Hons Degree in Graphic design. Whilst studying, Mel toured the UK as a street artist completing reproductions of Old Masters paintings on vast canvases. After graduation, Mel continued his tours, also undertaking mural commissions and fine art reproductions. In 1997 he joined The Grand Union Design Company where he worked as a muralist and specialist decorative effects artist. Mel formed his own company in 2002 and has since distinguished himself as one of the UK's leading muralists. Two examples of his work -----> Out of all the mural artists i have looked at Mel Holmes is one of my favorites. I like the 3D feel in his work particularly in the first image to the right, it really looks like you can walk through the archway to the wine cabinet. |

areas of illustration
I chose to look at murals as I haven’t really looked into them before and I think that they are an effective way to get your work seen in public places without having to pay for exhibition fees or hire of a hall or gallery.
Mural description:
A mural is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface. A particularly distinguishing characteristic of mural painting is that the architectural elements of the given space are harmoniously incorporated into the picture.
